Upcoming events on the Halifax Waterfront
Waterfront Development is proud to sponsor these upcoming waterfront events taking place in the next couple of weeks.
Schooner Bowdoin
We are expecting a visit from Schooner Bowdoin this week. They are en route and will berth at Maritime Museum of the Atlantic wharf, Halifax waterfront. (We will post public tour times, if available, on our web site.) Schooner Bowdoin is one of the strongest wooden vessels built. It was designed for Arctic waters and has completed a total of 28 expeditions above the Arctic Circle. It is now used by New England and the Maine Maritime Academy for educational purposes, for research, and for delivering supplies to Arctic communities.
Sci-On-The-Fly
Discovery Centre’s Sci-On-The-Fly booth will be on the Halifax waterfront around Tall Ships Quay on Aug 18, 25 and 30. Kids of all ages are encouraged to drop by from 10 am – 1 pm to try out the free Slimy Science Activity Area, Bubble Trouble Activity Area, Rockets to the Sky! and Non-Newtonian Fluid Pool.
alFresco filmFesto
There are just 2 films remaining in the Summer of Murray outdoor film series — Groundhog Day (Aug 19) and Rushmore (Aug 26). Shows start at 9 pm near the Halifax Seaport entrance. Rain dates are Saturday evenings.

Before this Friday evening’s show, Nova Scotia musician Amanda LeBlanc is putting on a free performance at Tall Ships Quay (7:45 pm start), presented by Atlantic Canada Sea-Dees.
Sands at Salter Official Opening and IncrEDIBLE Picnic
This Sunday, August 21 is the official opening of Sands at Salter and we’re hosting an IncrEDIBLE Picnic. It is the perfect family friendly event to open the Sands at Salter green space and urban beach, located next to Bishop’s Landing and it is the first time for the Select Nova Scotia picnic on the Halifax waterfront. Local chefs and vendors will be on site with fresh, local food and beverages available for purchase.
The picnic takes place from 11 am – 3 pm and is free to attend. The day also includes live music, a farm animal petting zoo, and children’s activities. Bring a picnic blanket and come and play at Sands at Salter (rain or shine).
Walking Wednesdays
Join the Downtown Dartmouth Business Commission for an active lunch break. Bring your sneakers, friends and co-workers for a free, weekly Downtownwalk through downtown Dartmouth from noon-1 pm until Aug 31. Register by emailing info@downtowndartmouth.ca or phoning 466-2997.
FIVB Beach Volleyball SWATCH World Junior Championships
From Aug 31 to Sept 4 the Halifax waterfront will host the world’s best under 21 Beach Volleyball players at this championship. For five days, 25+ countries will compete for the right to be called World Champions. Over 2,000 tons of sand will be trucked in to the Salter Street parking lot, creating a world class venue with seating for 2,000 fans in the heart of Nova Scotia’s capital city. Four-hundred tonnes of the sand used for the courts will remain at Sands at Salter, thanks to a donation by FIVB host Sports & Entertainment Atlantic. Tickets are on sale at sandjamhalifax.ca
The community is invited to take in some of the action on Wed., Aug 31 for a Free Community Day.
